 2024 Summer Learning Camp for Priority Students

The FSSD will offer a Summer Learning Camp (rising 1st – 8th grades) scheduled June 3 – June 27, 2024 (excluding Fridays). Camp is free and housed at Poplar Grove Elementary and Poplar Grove Middle School, located at 1030 Excellence Way in Franklin. The camp is funded through the Tennessee Learning Loss Remediation and Student Acceleration Act, designed to provide additional summer learning opportunities that are essential to accelerate students’ educational growth and to ensure that all children have the opportunity to reach their goals and dreams. 

2024 InformatioN for SLC Campers
Per the Tennessee Learning Loss Remediation and Student Acceleration Act, registration will be offered first to priority students and current third-grade (rising fourth-grade) students who are required by law to attend in order to be promoted.

• There will be seven hours of daily programming for rising grades 1-8 and four hours for rising kindergarten.
• Camp hours are 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.  for rising 1-8 (8:30-12:00 for rising kindergartners)
• Daily programming must include four hours of reading and math instruction (with at least one hour of this block dedicated to math and at least one hour for reading), one hour of intervention, and one hour of physical activity or “play.” 
• Instruction will be provided in a casual and fun format by licensed and endorsed teachers.
• Middle school students assigned to "summer school" will receive required instruction for promotion.
• Breakfast, lunch, and a snack will be provided.
• FSSD will provide bus transportation for students.
• If a student attends a summer learning camp, he/she will have access to MAC extended care (MAC fees and eligibility will apply).

Gentry's Educational Foundation partners with FSSD to offer children in Franklin the opportunity to enrich their lives through education and mentoring. Community support and grants provide funding.

The Summer MAC Program is an extension of the Franklin Special School District’s before and afternoon care program. It is designed to emphasize a relaxed and casual atmosphere  with stimulating teacher-directed activities. Children are able to choose from a variety of enrichment programs that are designed to benefit children emotionally, socially, physically and mentally.  The program is non-discriminating and designed to accommodate children in grades Kindergarten through 8th grades.

The very popular Story Bus program is part of FSSD’s community outreach program and is designed to foster a love for reading in children ages 4 through the 4th grade (younger if accompanied by an adult).  The operation of the Story Bus has been primarily during the summer with a staff composed of certified teachers and volunteers who love reading with children.

The Story Bus program is free and concentrates on the fostering of a love of reading in young children, but the district hopes to be able to expand its focus on the academic needs of children through the eighth grade.

Children may choose a good book, curl up on a beanbag and read or have books read to them. Whatever the format, children are sure to have a good time aboard the Story Bus.

Parents may sign their children on board for up to 45 minutes while shopping. This is the amount of time that children generally remain interested and enjoy their stay on the bus. For smooth operation of the Story Bus program, parents must adhere to the time limit. Also, a cell phone number must be provided at the time of drop off in case a parent needs to be contacted. Masks are recommended and social distancing practices will be in place, as feasible.

Young Scholars Institute

A Summer Enrichment Program

The Young Scholars Institute, sponsored by the FSSD, offers challenging, exploratory classes that are designed for independent and highly motivated learners. The courses are academically and artistically challenging. YSI is designed for the mature, independent student who is ready to change classes. YSI is proud to provide this opportunity to the students of our community.

The 2024 Institute will be located at Freedom Middle School, located at 750 Highway 96 West. The Junior Scholars program serves students who have completed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades (ages 7-10). Senior Scholars serves students who have completed the 5th grade and above (ages 11-14).

The dates for 2024 Institute are June 3-7 and June 10-14.

Young Scholars is divided into two sessions during the summer. Junior and Senior Scholars both run from 8:15 a.m. until 2:45 p.m.  The Morning and Afternoon Care program is also available for FSSD students both before and after YSI classes. Students may attend one or both weeks.

Online registrants complete all forms online. If you are turning in your registration by paper, please complete the parent forms below (right column) and return by mail (along with the registration). If your application is not accepted/on the waiting list, we will notify you.

For online payment:  Online Payment
For payment by check: Make checks payable to Franklin Special School District. Include student(s) name on the check. Full tuition ($225 per week) is due on or before May 24, 2024. If paid after this date, there will be a $15 late fee.
